I enjoyed this spirited and fast-paced tale set in Medieval England. Lady Evelyn, the only daughter and heiress of her father, the Baron of Rayne, is a free thinker well beyond her times. Seeing marriage as a way for a man to control her and her inheritance, she is determined to stay free of any man and vows to never marry. When she meets her Shadow Guardian while listening to a conversation involving treason and betrayal, she is immediately drawn to him and sparks ignite from their first meeting. Still determined to avoid allowing any man to inhibit her freedom, Evelyn ruthlessly tries to supress her budding feelings for her Shadow Guardian – Gabriel – away, but without much success.
As the story unfolds, Lady Evelyn finds Gabriel is there to save her from her reckless actions at every turn. The evil Sir Richard Langley, the man behind the treasonous plot, is determined to succeed and will not let Lady Evelyn get in his way. Who will win the day? You’ll need to read this delightful tale to find out.
This story has some great plot twists and intriguing sub-plots that lead me to believe that there is more to come from this talented author. Some of the secondary characters will definitely have their own story, especially the sweet-tempered cousin, Lady Madeline and Gabriel’s twin brother, Sir Alexander. Ms. Blacketer writes sparkling dialogue that brings this book to life and all the action kept me turning the pages quickly. If you enjoy a good medieval romance, this will be one that you’ll want to read. It’s sure to please.
