Historical Western Romance

Reviewer rating: 4 Stars

What a great story.

This is the first time I’ve read anything by this author and really enjoyed this book. The storyline is much like many western romances, but her manner in handling it is quite unique.

Adeline Buckley flees her home when her father demands that she marry Billy Johnson. A man she’s known her entire life, but shows his true colors by betraying her with another woman and physically abusing her, after she’s given in and let the man take her virginity.

A Madam in a local brothel helps her escape on a stagecoach bound for Texas. When she finally arrives in Four Winds after a miserable trip where she fights illness the whole way, she’s mistaken for a mail order bride for Jackson Pruitt. Adeline wakes up in a strange bed and finds herself married to this gorgeous man.

Feeling Jackson will not want her if she tells him the truth—she lies about how she lost her virginity after they are caught up in passion.  All is going well until Johnson shows up. Then all hell breaks loose. The story takes a horrible gut-wrenching turn that just took my breath away, I was so surprised. The rest of the story pulled at my heart strings, keeping me on the edge of my seat.

Ms. McQueen does an excellent job on building the character arcs and her pacing was near perfect. I’ll definitely be reading more by this talented author. I highly recommend this great romance about two endearing characters.
