Poppy and Win (Winston) married young, and have been in love and together for fourteen years. Win is the second son of a duke, but turned away from his family to pursue a career as a police inspector and to marry Poppy. He is a logical man who likes answers and abhors lies. Poppy manages a bookstore, and is hiding a very large secret from her husband. Poppy and her sisters have supernatural abilities, which they work to control and to hide from society. In Poppy’s case, this also means her husband.
An attack on Win by a beast has left him near death and horribly scarred. He does recover, but comes to realize that his wife has been keeping secrets from him their whole married life. He feels betrayed and confused, and he leaves her. Initially, it would seem that the fault is Poppy’s, but we discover that Win has made his own deal with the devil. It almost seems impossible that the couple will ever get back together, both because of their own actions, and the external events and beings working against them. As they take one step forward to mending their relationship, they get pushed two steps back.
Kristen Callihan has created a world in Victorian London that even non-fans of paranormal fiction will enjoy. This book is riveting, and has many twists and turns, and I highly recommend it. The two previous books in this series (Firelight and Moonglow) are recommended reads to fully appreciate the details of this story, as well.
This book will be released February 26 in paperback for $7.99, and in kindle format for $6.64.
