My Loving Vigil Keeping is the story of Della Anders, who has been raised in Salt Lake City by her aunt and uncle after losing her father at a young age to a tragic mining accident. Growing up with her aunt and uncle had not been easy for Della. They taught her to be ashamed of who she was: a miner’s daughter whose mother ran away, leaving Della in care of her father. Her aunt and uncle are considerably wealthy compared to the poor mining roots from which Della came, and that also plays a role in the shame with which she was raised.

When Della decides to take a job teaching at a rural mining camp, she is forced to face her demons. Slowly, she begins to learn to no longer be ashamed of who she is and where she comes from. Here she finds friends, and learns to love again.  This love is tested when she recalls how it felt to lose her father. As someone with a fear of loss, she struggles with those feelings, until a tragic event opens her eyes to what it truly means to love.

Over all, I really enjoyed this book. I especially appreciated that this wasn’t a fast-paced, Woman Meets Man And Falls Head-Over-Heels In Love Instantly kind of story. It felt much more realistic and true-to-life. Carla Kelly takes her time with the characters, letting them grow and change at a realistic pace.

The realism is no doubt based in fact, as the story is based on the very real life Scofield Mine Disaster in 1900. Carla’s research into both the disaster and the time period is impeccable, which clearly shows on every page of this book. She also does a fantastic job with the conflict her characters – and especially Della – face.

My Loving Vigil Keeping is a novel I would not normally read, as many of the themes around which it centers were either foreign to me or outside my normal range of interest.  That being said, it is a book I am glad that I had the opportunity to read.  It held my interest throughout, and while I probably won’t read it again, I am glad that I did at least once.  I recommend you give it a read as well!

REVIEWER BIO:

I am a thirty something year old who often feels like she was born in the wrong era. By day I am the office manager of a small accounting firm, and a full time student working towards becoming a CPA. By night, I enjoy losing myself in the past by watching classic movies and reading historical fiction. I am also an avid knitter who loves spinning her own yarn. I enjoy reading books set in all different eras, but my personal favorite era is the early 1900′s through the first World War.
